12:52 pm - scandal! shock! horror! moral outrage! So now there's a New York Times article about the [self-righteous] indignation of people who express shock 'n outrage that Jon Corzine wasn't wearing a seat belt when his car crashed.
I quote:
Jon Rantzman, 67, of Walnut Creek, Calif., who posted a critical comment on the Empire Zone blog of The New York Times Web site, said in a phone interview: “A governor, any governor, should be a role model, not a scofflaw. How can we pass a law and fine the citizens of New Jersey for not doing something” that the governor “gets away with”?
Um...Mr. Rantzman? The governer didn't get away with it. He was critically injured in a horrible car crash.
It's not that I entirely disagree with those of you who are surprised that a governor would ride around without a safety belt. Yes, that was dumb. And yeah, it was also illegal. But you know what? I have bigger things to be morally indignant about. On the scale of political scandals, Jon Corzine's front seat habits just don't rate very high.

02:25 am - Darwin laughed. Does anyone else find it sort of funny that the company supposedly responsible for the E. coli outbreaks is named Natural Selection Foods?

02:19 pm - help! Problem solved.
Goddamn windows. Goddamn amazon seller.
So, I bought myself an very inexpensive secondhand scanner, since I need one for some of the freelance stuff I'm doing. The amazon seller's report mentioned nothing about compatibility problems, but now that I have the scanner (a Canon CanoScan FB630U) and its installation CD, I'm not able to install it on my computer, since, as the installation CD "oops, there's been a problem" menu informs me, this scanner was designed for Mac or for Windows 98, but not for Windows XP, which is what I have. (Please pardon the run-on sentence.)
The logical but highly annoying thing to do would be to box up the item and ship it back to the seller, who really should have made it clear on his/her page that this scanner wouldn't work for all computers. But I do need a scanner, and I don't have a lot of money, and I really would like to keep this one, if at all possible. Do any of you techie types out there have any suggestions? Is there some sort of marvelous driver I can download to fix my compatibility issue?

09:53 pm So what do you think all these airports are doing with passengers' discarded liquids and gels? If I hopped on the bus to LaGuardia, could I maybe stock up on free toiletries?

12:24 am - so precious on their little wheels I veered dangerously close to purchasing a pair of pet mice this evening. Their names would have been Eloise and Mathilda.
As K. pointed out, buying mice in New York City seems rather ironic.
Note to self: Do not stop into pet stores on your way home unless absolutely necessary.

07:19 am - Whaaat? From the New York Times: Throughout its history, the C.I.A. has prided itself for its independence and flair, and for a culture that values truth-telling and risk-taking over deference to authority.
Um...excuse me? The C.I.A.? Truth-telling? Throughout its history? What the fuck!?

07:33 pm - book suggestions! Help! I just zoomed through a couple P.D. James mysteries, followed by a healthy dose of Arthur Conan Doyle, and now I'm at a loss for what to read. I could use a break from crime-solving, but otherwise I'm open to any suggestions, fiction or non-fiction.
Read, get set, recommend.
